Why

She had a dream and she realized it.

Hey wait but sit down

This is Megumi Igarashi

She’s a Japanese artist

Japan, the country with some of the most fucked up pornography and the penis festival

Where the vagina is basically illegal to talk about

So she did a bunch of art featuring 3D sculptures of her vagina, including this kayak, and was put in jail for it

She was indicted again in December on obscenity charges for selling vagina art to crowdfund for the kayak and could spend two years in prison

In Japan, women’s vaginas are treated as though they are men’s property. The trains here usually display pornographic advertisements. As a woman, I find that blatant objectification to be humiliating. I’m disgusted by it. My body belongs to me.
So, with this project I wanted to release the vagina from the standard Japanese paradigm. Japan is lenient towards expressions of male sexuality and arousal, but not so for women. When a woman uses her body in artistic expression, her work gets ignored, and people treat her as if she’s some sex-crazed idiot. It all comes back to misogyny. And the vagina is at the heart of it.
The vagina is ridiculed. It’s lusted after. Men don’t see women as equals—to them, women are just vaginas. Then they call my vagina-themed work “obscene,” and judge me according to laws written by and for men. [x]

She plans to turn her trial in to a manga comic. She seems pretty sure she’s not going to do any jail time but if you’d like to help her pay for her inevitable fine and court fees, you can check out her online store. There are little glow in the dark vagina characters.

Wow I’ve seen this reblogged a ton of times without seeing the whole going to jail part.

Here’s a recent article about her from July of 2017.  It looks like she did some brief time in jail, and is currently still working on this artistic effort, as well as trying to raise awareness about a new terrorism law and the jail/prison system in Japan.

Reblogging again for the updates!

1985: National Geo make millions from ‘Afghan Girl’ portrait

2016: Still has the status of a refugee and may spend 14 years in jail because of her papers

I fucking hate this picture and everything it represents. Steve McCurry made millions off of this picture and its what launched his photojournalism career into the spotlight. While the woman in this picture got absolutely NOTHING and lived an awful and horrific existence. And calling her “Afghan Girl” is so disrespectful. Her name is Sharbat Gula and her life could have been made 1000X easier had McCurry shared his wealth with her - or even if he couldn’t find her, to share it with of refugees who he exploited. And honestly the idea of a white man going into wartorn nations (that are that way bc of american imperialism) to take pictures of refugees to profit off of their pain and trauma is gross

Friendly reminder that the intro to Lion King….the non english bits leading up to the “circle of life” is not random yelling in *Africa voice* it is an actual language, Zulu, spoken by 10 million people, it is the most widely spoken language (out of 11) in the country of South Africa (1 out of the 54 countries in the continent of Africa, the continent home  to somewhere between 1500-2000 languages and around 3000 distinct ethnic groups)

this isn’t to say that you have to friggin learn the language to sing along with a disney film, it just means that you should be mindful, respectful, appreciative and respectful. don’t be yelling out whatever noise comes in to your head when you hear it

Ok but someone knows what does this say?

The lyrics before the english comes in…in “circle of life”

Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [Here comes a lion, Father]
Sithi uhm ingonyama [Oh yes, it’s a lion]

Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [Here comes a lion, Father]
Sithi uhm ingonyama [Oh yes, it’s a lion]
Ingonyama [It’s a lion]

Siyo Nqoba [We’re going to conquer]

Ingonyama Ingonyama nengw’ enamabala [A lion and a leopard come to this open place] (repeats)

[queue English lyrics]

I would like to further add that language has there own cultural nuances so something that can sound extremely meaningful in one languages may not sound as majestic when translated to another (I know this as someone who has an understanding of 5 languages and speaks 3 of them fluently) so if you are thinking “oh it ain’t that deep they are just yelling: the lion is coming!” dial it back

Worth noting that “lion” and especially the word Ingonyama is a very respectful word to talk about a Zulu king, especially in praise. It’s so heavily associated with royalty in isiZulu that a different word is used for an animal lion - Ibhubesi. This isn’t just announcing the arrival of an animal, it’s celebrating the arrival (or coronation?) of the king

/\ Whoop, I didn’t know this

Im sorry I have to make one of these

my partner hasnt been getting paid on top of the slumlord getting ready to evict us because they are selling property to move out to the suburbs

#help

#blacktranscrowdfund

#blacktranshomelessness

almost 700 notes and only $50 / $5500 donated so far - anything helps!

no offense but if this was a white trans man’s post it would have 10,000+ notes already. if you can take 2 minutes out of your day to watch her video on gofundme, share, and/or donate, all of those 2 minutes put together will add up to something meaningful for someone who really needs the support right now.

3000 notes and less than 40 donations - every little bit helps!

Please donate and rb to help Khrys and her partner find somewhere to live before winter hits!

Please help Khrys, she’s an amazing person and she’s spent years both helping other Trans people and struggling.

I’m genuinely… Furious that Khrystenne has had to beg for months to get help with basic shelter meanwhile y’all will fund some bum ass white girls scam y’all over a rip off tv show. Get my girl some coins
